Tributes have continued to pour in from across Nigeria following the death of an army officer, Lt. Col. Umar Faruq, who was killed during a deadly attack by insurgents on a military base in Kukawa, Borno State.
The attack, believed to have been carried out by fighters linked to the extremist group Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), occurred between March 8 and March 9, 2026, when militants reportedly overran the base.
During the assault, several soldiers were killed, military vehicles were set ablaze, and ammunition was seized by the attackers.
Lt. Col. Faruq, who was the commanding officer of the brigade, was among the officers who lost their lives while defending the base.
His death has sparked widespread reactions from Nigerians, many of whom described him as a courageous officer who died in service to the country.

Just weeks before the tragic incident, residents in the community had celebrated Lt. Col. Faruq for successfully thwarting an attack targeting political figures in the area.
Videos circulating online showed locals lifting the late army officer’s hands in celebration and praising him for protecting their community.
His killing marks the third loss of a commanding officer in Borno State within a week, highlighting the increasing intensity of attacks by insurgents.
Chief of Army Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, described Lt. Col. Faruq as “a gallant and dedicated officer whose bravery and commitment to duty will remain an inspiration to the Nigerian Armed Forces.”
Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, also paid tribute, saying the officer died protecting the people of the state.
“Lt. Col. Umar Faruq served with honor and courage. His sacrifice reminds us of the risks our soldiers take daily to defend our communities,” the governor said.
