The Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi has sentenced two individuals to prison terms over their involvement in sextortion, a form of cybercrime that has been rising across major Nigerian cities.

Justice D. I. Dipeolu delivered the judgment on March 4, 2026, convicting Ademola Joshua Oluwadamilare and Dolapo Adisa after they were prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. The anti-graft agency charged the duo before the court on a nine-count charge bordering on cyberstalking, obtaining money under false pretence, and money laundering.

According to the prosecution, the convicts operated an online scheme in which they lured unsuspecting victims through digital platforms. Investigations revealed that the suspects manipulated victims into sharing explicit images and videos before threatening to release the materials publicly unless money was paid.

Court documents presented by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission showed that several victims were coerced into transferring funds to the suspects to prevent the exposure of the compromising content. The scheme, commonly known as sextortion, has become one of the growing forms of cyber-related exploitation affecting internet users.

After reviewing the evidence and the pleas entered by the defendants, Justice Dipeolu handed down custodial sentences intended to serve as a warning to others involved in online fraud and digital exploitation.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said the conviction forms part of its broader effort to combat cybercrime and protect internet users from online blackmail and financial fraud. The agency also urged members of the public to remain cautious in their digital interactions and promptly report suspicious online activity.

Authorities say the case highlights ongoing enforcement efforts in Nigeria to curb cyber-related crimes, particularly sextortion, which continues to target vulnerable individuals through social media and other online communication channels.
