The Federal Ministry of Education has entered into a strategic collaboration with the National Population Commission (NPC) to incorporate birth registration and demographic data into Nigeria’s school enrollment and education planning framework.
The development was announced in a statement shared on the ministry’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, noted that reliable population data is critical for effective education planning.
He explained that accurate birth records would support proper school location planning, equitable teacher distribution, realistic enrollment forecasting, and fair allocation of educational resources.
The minister noted that embedding birth registration into school admission procedures would also help ensure appropriate age placement for pupils and strengthen the credibility of academic records nationwide.
However, he stressed that enforcement of the policy would only commence after registration services are widely accessible across the country, so as not to create unintended difficulties for families.

In response, the NPC Chairman, Aminu Yusuf, reiterated the commission’s constitutional responsibility to manage Nigeria’s civil registration and vital statistics system.
He disclosed that the commission currently operates more than 4,000 registration centres nationwide and is in the process of upgrading its digital infrastructure.
The statement added that both institutions agreed to establish a joint technical working group to harmonise verification procedures and ensure database interoperability.”
The partnership reinforces the federal government’s commitment to evidence-based education reform and inclusive national development.
