The federal government has explained that a technical glitch was responsible for the delay in the payment of February salaries to treasury-funded workers, assuring that disbursement has now commenced across the country.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, the office of the accountant-general of the federation said the disruption had been resolved and payments began on March 2, 2026.
According to the statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Bawa Mokwa, the delay was not intentional.
“The office of the accountant-general of the federation has commenced the payment of February 2026 salaries to federal government treasury-funded workers. Payments began on Monday, March 2, 2026,” the statement read.
It added that the delay was due to a technical hitch, which has been fixed, with safeguards introduced to prevent a recurrence.

The clarification followed anxiety among federal workers, whose salaries are traditionally paid before the end of each month.
The statement also provided an update on outstanding wage awards, disclosing that approval had been secured and the process concluded for the payment of one month’s arrears out of the three months owed.
The wage award was introduced as a temporary intervention to cushion the impact of ongoing economic reforms and rising living costs on public sector employees.
Last week, organised labour in the federal public service issued a February 27, 2026 deadline to the government, demanding the immediate release of funds to clear the outstanding wage awards and other pending allowances across ministries, departments and agencies.
The ultimatum was conveyed by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council in a letter to the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.
The unions warned that failure to meet the deadline would prompt the eight civil service unions to take further action.
With salary payments now underway, attention has shifted to the clearance of the remaining wage award arrears and other outstanding entitlements owed to workers.
