Ogoni youths under the auspices of Ogoni Youths Development Initiative (OYDI) have decried the non-upgrade of facilities at the University of Environmental Technology in Ogoniland by the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
Speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt, the President of OYDI, Imeabe Oscar,
lamented that the institution had yet to commence academic activities, as it grapples with inadequate infrastructure, including hostels, classrooms, and laboratories, amongst others.
He said that Ogoni youths have resolved to occupy the gates of the NNPCL if funding is not immediately released to the university within the next seven days.
“We deeply frown against a deliberate action by the NNPCL to truncate the smooth take-off of the Federal University of Environment Technology (FUET).
“the NNPCL by its action has breached an agreement reached between the Ogoni people and President Bola Tinubu as it has refused to adequately fund the instruction as directed by the president.

“Investigation has shown that other institutions established alongside the FUET by the federal government are being adequately funded for full operations, while the FUET is yet to access such benefits.
“We are non-violent. However, we will not let the fruit of the labours of our slain heroes suffer neglect and abandonment,” he said.
Furthermore, Oscar noted that some contractors have locked up some of the buildings, leaving the students and teachers without offices and classrooms.
“Currently, all projects at the campus have been halted due to non-payment of contractors by NNPCL,” he added.
