The Delta State Government has intensified oversight of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, as the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, led a monitoring team to the College of Education, Warri, to enforce full implementation of the student loan scheme.

The visit forms part of a statewide compliance exercise ordered by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to ensure that eligible students in Delta State are not denied access to the Federal Government-backed education loan programme.

During the inspection, Prof. Tonukari, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary and senior directors from the Ministry of Higher Education, met with the institution’s management and reviewed operational procedures guiding the disbursement and administration of the NELFUND scheme. The team examined records and processes to confirm that the framework approved for implementation is being strictly followed.

The Commissioner restated the government’s position on transparency and accountability, noting that the monitoring exercise is aimed at protecting students and safeguarding the credibility of the loan initiative. He said the administration remains determined to remove financial barriers that hinder access to higher education in the state.

Prior to the Warri inspection, the compliance team had visited Delta State University, Abraka; University of Delta, Agbor; Delta State Polytechnic; and Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba. Across the institutions, officials assessed student access to the loan, measured compliance levels, and identified operational gaps requiring prompt attention.

Prof. Tonukari expressed satisfaction with the level of progress recorded so far, observing that the scheme is already easing financial pressure on students. He maintained that the exercise goes beyond routine supervision and represents a deliberate effort to ensure that public policy translates into measurable benefits for students.

The inspection tour is expected to continue with visits to Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, and the College of Education, Mosogar, as the ministry works toward achieving full compliance in all state-owned tertiary institutions.

The compliance drive reflects the Oborevwori administration’s broader agenda to strengthen access to quality higher education and ensure that Delta students fully benefit from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund.
