Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has announced plans to reintroduce soft loan schemes for primary and secondary school teachers across the state, in a move aimed at improving their welfare and restoring dignity to the teaching profession.
The governor disclosed that the loan package — which will cover housing, cars, and motorcycles — is expected to be rolled out before the end of 2026.
According to him, the initiative is designed to help teachers improve their living conditions and feel more valued for their role in shaping society.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony of 12,779 sets of furniture for public schools in Birnin Kebbi, Gov. Idris said his administration is determined to end what he described as the long-standing neglect of classroom teachers.
He emphasized that the soft loans would be provided on favorable terms to ease financial burdens and enable teachers to own homes and vehicles, thereby enhancing their productivity and morale.
“We are committed to ending the era where classroom teachers are treated as second-class citizens,” the governor said, assuring that additional support packages would be introduced to further strengthen the education sector.
The announcement came alongside the inauguration of 12,779 newly procured furniture sets meant for both teachers and students in public schools across the state.
The furniture distribution is part of broader efforts by the administration to improve infrastructure and create a more conducive learning environment.
Gov. Idris directed that the furniture be shared equally between the Kebbi State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and the Kebbi State Universal Basic Education Board to ensure fair and efficient allocation to schools in need.
Education stakeholders in attendance described the development as a significant intervention, noting that inadequate furniture has long been a challenge in many public schools across the state.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Halima Bande, praised the governor’s commitment to revitalizing the education sector.
She observed that Idris’s background as a former teacher is clearly influencing his policies and priorities.
According to Bande, the administration’s focus on teachers’ welfare, infrastructure upgrades, and institutional support signals a deliberate effort to reposition public education in Kebbi State.
With the planned rollout set for completion before the end of 2026, teachers across Kebbi State are expected to benefit from what many describe as one of the most comprehensive welfare interventions in recent years.
