The Chairman of the National Sports Council (NSC), Dr. Shehu Dikko, has assured organisers of the Nigerian Electric Supply Industry (NESI) Games of the Commission’s full technical backing, in line with the agency’s mandate and the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Tinubu.

Dikko said the NSC is committed to ensuring the successful staging of the maiden edition of the industry-wide sporting event. “We are ready to give full support and provide technical assistance to make sure that the NESI Games hold successfully,” he stated.

Chairman of the NESI Week Steering Committee, Dr. Anthony Obiora, described the initiative as the first nationally structured sporting competition for the Nigerian electricity supply industry.

According to him, the Games are designed to promote workforce wellness, strengthen inter-sector collaboration, encourage leadership development, and contribute to national sports growth.

“The NESI Games is designed to promote workforce wellness, foster collaborations among sectors, leadership development, and most importantly, it’s also a way to boost our sports economy,” Obiora said.

The competition will feature nine sporting events, including football, athletics, volleyball and e-sports, with participants drawn from across the NESI ecosystem.

Activities will be conducted in phases, starting with regional qualifiers and progressing to quarterfinals before culminating in the national finals scheduled for November 15–20, 2026, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

Dikko also encouraged the Steering Committee to prioritise the development of sports facilities within their operational areas and to promote community engagement through sporting initiatives. “You need to also encourage your members to add value to their area of operation,” he advised.

Obiora expressed confidence that, with the backing of the NSC and other stakeholders, the Games would set a strong foundation for sustained sports development within the sector.

“This is the backing we need,” he said, noting that although it is the first edition, the organisers already possess experience in sports development and administration.
