The Kano State Police Command has announced a restriction of movement in Kano Municipal and Ungogo Local Government Areas ahead of Saturday’s State Assembly by-elections.
The restriction, which will take effect from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on February 21, 2026, will apply to motor vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles, as part of measures to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.
This followed a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), chaired by the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Amb. Zango Abdu, and co-chaired by the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.
According to a statement issued by the Spokesperson of Command, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa, the Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, had concluded all security arrangements for the by-elections in the affected constituencies.

He said only vehicles on essential services, including ambulances, fire service trucks, and those conveying electoral officials and accredited observers, would be exempted from the restriction.
The Command also directed that only eligible voters would be allowed access to polling units, while only agents officially identified by INEC would be permitted to operate at the centres.
It warned that the carrying of weapons, wearing of clothing bearing political party insignia, and loitering around polling units would not be tolerated.
The police further barred state-backed security outfits, including vigilante groups, neighbourhood watch members, Hisbah and KAROTA personnel, from operating at polling units during the elections.
While assuring residents of providing adequate security, the command urged them to cooperate with the security personnel and report any suspicious activities to the Command through its designated emergency lines.
