Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas has intensified efforts to expand skills acquisition and youth empowerment in Delta South Senatorial District, as beneficiaries of the NCDMB-sponsored Electricity Metering and Repairs training commence intensive sessions in Akure, Ondo State.

The programme, facilitated by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, is part of a broader capacity building drive backed by the Delta South lawmaker to equip young people with practical, income generating skills in the power sector.

Though a first term senator, Joel-Onowakpo has drawn attention for combining legislative duties with constituency focused initiatives. From sponsoring bills and motions to supporting oversight functions and rolling out empowerment programmes, the lawmaker has placed youth development at the centre of his representation.

The ongoing electricity metering and repairs training in Akure follows similar sessions earlier conducted in Aba, Abia State, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, and Warri, Delta State. Participants are undergoing both theoretical and hands on practical classes designed to prepare them for opportunities in Nigeria’s growing electricity and metering services market.

According to coordinators of the programme, the training is structured to meet industry standards, with experienced facilitators, structured coursework and monitored practical sessions. Beneficiaries have also acknowledged the quality of logistics, accommodation and welfare arrangements put in place for the duration of the course.

Several trainees who spoke about the initiative described it as a rare opportunity to gain technical knowledge in electricity installation, metering systems and repair services, skills that remain in high demand across the country.

Observers note that the focus on electricity metering is strategic, given ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s power sector and the need for trained technicians to support distribution companies and private energy providers.

Supporters of the senator say the programme reflects a deliberate plan to create long term value rather than short term relief. They argue that technical training in fields such as electricity metering can open pathways to entrepreneurship, employment and financial stability for young people in Delta South.

As the NCDMB training gathers momentum, stakeholders have urged participants to approach the opportunity with discipline and commitment, stressing that the objective is to build lasting competence that can shape their future careers.

The initiative further strengthens calls for greater collaboration between lawmakers and federal agencies in promoting skills development, local content growth and sustainable empowerment across Nigeria.
