The 2026 Oil & Gas Industry Games gathered fresh momentum on Thursday as the Local Organising Committee met with the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Diko, ahead of Saturday’s highly anticipated finals in Abuja.

Chairman of the LOC for the 2026 Oil & Gas Industry Games, Engr. Sulaiman Sulaiman, led the delegation alongside Secretary Aishatu Abdullahi and other committee members on a courtesy visit to the National Sports Commission headquarters. The visit was aimed at appreciating the Commission’s support and formally inviting its leadership to the grand finale scheduled for February 14 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

During the meeting, Sulaiman acknowledged the role of the Commission in providing modern sporting facilities and a secure environment for the 2026 Oil & Gas Industry Games. He described the partnership as vital to the smooth hosting of the event, which has grown into one of the most enduring corporate sporting competitions in Nigeria.

The LOC Chairman noted that this year’s tournament marks the 20th edition of the Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Games and celebrates four decades of sustained engagement within the sector. According to him, fifteen oil and gas companies across the country, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, are participating in the 2026 Oil & Gas Industry Games.

He explained that the biennial competition is designed to strengthen unity, promote physical fitness and deepen collaboration within the industry. The event features thirteen sporting categories, including football, basketball, lawn tennis, table tennis and swimming, drawing hundreds of athletes and officials from across the country.

Sulaiman thanked Shehu Diko for granting the meeting despite his tight schedule and said hosting the 2026 Oil & Gas Industry Games in Abuja under the Commission’s leadership adds significance to the milestone edition.

In his remarks, Shehu Diko commended the organisers and participating companies for sustaining the competition over forty years. He described the Oil and Gas Industry Games as a model for how corporate institutions can contribute meaningfully to national sports development.

The NSC Chairman reaffirmed the Commission’s readiness to support initiatives that promote grassroots and corporate sports, stressing that sports should not be limited to elite athletes but embraced by all sectors of society. He encouraged the organisers to continue using the platform to foster wellness, unity and healthy rivalry within the oil and gas community.

The 2026 Oil & Gas Industry Games officially commenced on February 7th in Abuja, ushering in days of competition, networking and renewed industry camaraderie. With the finals set for Saturday at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, attention is now firmly fixed on what promises to be a fitting climax to a landmark edition.
