The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed the death of a 30-year-old man, identified as Ashahabu Ubale, who reportedly suffocated while attempting to retrieve a burning gas cylinder from a well in the Gwarzo Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at the Saulawa Quarters in Gwarzo Town, said a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi.
Abdullahi said the emergency response unit of the service received a distress call from Alhaji Dan Gwarzo, who reported that a man had entered a well during an emergency.
He explained that following the report, a rescue team from the Gwarzo branch office of the fire service was immediately mobilised to the scene.
“Upon arrival, the rescue team found a man of about 30 years of age, identified as Ashahabu Ubale, who had entered the well with the intention of retrieving a burning gas cylinder that had been thrown inside,” the statement said.

The fire service spokesman disclosed that during the process, the gas cylinder released gas inside the well, displacing oxygen and causing the victim to suffocate.
He added that the victim was rescued unconscious and later confirmed dead.
“His remains were subsequently handed over to police Constable Muhammad Zakiyyu of the Gwarzo Police Division,” Abdullahi said.
The Kano State Fire Service expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased.
The agency also warned members of the public against entering wells or other confined spaces without proper safety equipment, stressing that such actions could result in fatal consequences.
