Popular entrepreneur and nightlife mogul, Obinna Iyiegbu, widely known as Obi Cubana, is facing intense backlash and criticism following his involvement with the City Boy Movement, a political support group backing President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi Cubana reportedly accepted an invitation from Seyi Tinubu to support the movement, triggering a backlash from opposition supporters, particularly among some Igbo youths loyal to Labour Party leader, Peter Obi.

Critics accused the businessman of political betrayal, with calls on social media for mass unfollows and a boycott of his businesses. Despite the backlash, Obi Cubana maintains a strong online presence, boasting about 4.5 million followers on Instagram.

Reacting to the controversy, Obi Cubana defended his decision, stressing the importance of national unity and service.

Meanwhile, unverified reports circulated on February 8 suggesting that he had resigned from the City Boy Movement, although no official confirmation has been issued.

The development has continued to generate mixed reactions on social media.

@firstladyship remarked that“kudos to the Igbos for canceling Obi Cubana. Holding one of your own accountable shows that you’re a different breed. I’ve read your tweets, and I’m very impressed. Well done.”

@Odogwu_Ogidi commented: “Obinna Iyiegbu, aka Obi Cubana, will face consequences if he doesn’t step down from the City Boy nonsense. In fact, whether he resigns or not, he’s already made a mistake.”

@addel_cares stated that “I unfollowed him a long time ago. Nigerians don’t realize how powerful they are when united. Yes, he’s a billionaire, but the people are the ones who gave him significance.

“You can’t be a public figure and support something that harms your community.”

Offering a differing view, @_youfoundalex noted: “People confuse Obi’s social capital with political influence. I don’t believe he can sway votes for Tinubu in Oba, Anambra, or the South East.

“His brother ran for a representative position with Soludo’s full support, but lost his ward and local government area to a relatively unknown candidate. Politics isn’t just about making noise.”
