Journalist and a press freedom advocate, Livinus Victor, has denounced the increasing instances of intimidation, harassment, unlawful detention, and killing of journalists in Nigeria.

In a statement made in Abuja on Sunday, Victor characterized these actions as a troubling trend that threatens to silence the truth, hinder accountability, and undermine democratic institutions.

He urged security agencies to fulfill their constitutional duties by safeguarding journalists instead of targeting them.

Additionally, he called on both federal and state governments to foster an environment where media professionals can perform their roles without fear of persecution or violence.

“A country that silences its journalists is one where corruption can flourish unchecked.

“The press must operate independently, professionally, and free from intimidation. Press freedom is essential, not optional—it is a cornerstone of democracy,” Victor asserted.

He also appealed to civil society organizations, media stakeholders, and the international community to remain alert and continue advocating for electoral integrity and the protection of journalists’ rights.

Victor emphasized that Nigeria’s democratic progress relies not only on fair elections but also on a courageous and independent press dedicated to truth and accountability.

He urged senatirs to prioritize democracy over partisan interests by ensuring the full implementation of electronic transmission of results in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

He highlighted that electronic transmission of election results is not a political privilege but a democratic imperative.

According to him, credible elections are fundamental to national stability, public trust, and international respect.

He cautioned that any effort to undermine, manipulate, or eliminate the electronic transmission process would damage public confidence and exacerbate citizens’ frustrations with the political system.

“The future of over 240 million Nigerians should not be left to opaque processes. Transparent and verifiable elections are the foundation of any effective democracy. The Senate must align with history and uphold the integrity of the 2027 elections,” he concluded.
