The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) has condemned the deadly attack on Woro village in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, which reportedly claimed at least 170 lives, including women and children.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the organisation said the attack occurred on Tuesday, February 3, and was allegedly carried out by suspected Boko Haram insurgents.

MPAC said graphic images from the scene showed bodies scattered across the community, with bloodstains visible on the streets following the assault.

The organization said reports indicated that the attackers had earlier sent a letter to the district head of Woro, Alhaji Salihu Umar, informing him of their intention to visit the community for preaching. Suspecting a security threat, the district head reportedly alerted security agencies.

The militants later launched a violent reprisal on the village, killing residents, setting houses ablaze and abducting several people.

Describing the incident as a “heinous act of violence,” the group said the attack underscored Nigeria’s worsening security challenges and highlighted the urgent need for stronger protective measures for vulnerable communities.

The organisation urged the Kwara State Government to provide immediate relief and humanitarian assistance to affected residents, while calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to safeguard lives and property across the state.

While acknowledging recent military operations against armed groups in the area, MPAC said more comprehensive and sustained action was required. It called on the Federal Government to strengthen security across the broader Borgu axis, covering parts of Kebbi, Niger and Kwara states, and to work closely with traditional and community leaders to prevent further attacks.

They also appealed to the international community to support Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts and provide humanitarian assistance to victims of the violence.

MPAC said it stood in solidarity with the people of Woro, the Muslim community in Kwara State and Nigerians nationwide, calling for peace, justice and healing in the aftermath of the attack.
