Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele shared her views on movie marketing strategies via social media as she responds to critics.

Renowned for her unique blend of dance and humor in promoting her films, she is currently recognized as the highest-grossing filmmaker in Nollywood.

On Saturday, through a series of Instagram stories, Akindele made it clear that she does not impede anyone’s progress, asserting that collective success is advantageous for everyone involved.

She remarked, “I’m not the one hindering your progress. Ka rin ka po, yiye nin ye ni.”

She further encouraged others to pursue their own paths if they find it difficult to surpass or collaborate with existing ones, stating that “if you can’t beat them or join them, create your own path. Don’t let jealousy consume you. The sky is so big for everyone to fly. Eyin Werey jojo!”

Akindele advised her peers to explore alternative promotional strategies for their films, suggesting they either innovate or hire professionals for marketing.

“Go ahead and create alternative promotional or marketing strategies for your projects, or hire a company to do it,” she encouraged.

“You can do it! Opportunities are limitless, and everyone has their own journey. I am focused on mine and trust in God’s plan for me,” she concluded.

This discussion was prompted by comments from veteran filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, who recently critiqued the trend of filmmakers dancing to promote their movies during an interview.

He described this practice as exhausting but praised Akindele’s efforts.

He stated, “It is draining. I want to make a film, but only if I’m assured I won’t have to dance to sell it.”

Afolayan also expressed his concerns about the fixation on box office numbers, arguing that high cinema attendance is meaningless if creators do not see financial benefits from it.

“There’s no competition. I don’t care for two billion or even one billion in cinema revenue if I don’t make ten million from it,” he said.
