The political landscape in Zamfara State has witnessed a fresh realignment as a biological brother to the Secretary to the Zamfara State Government, Alhaji Bello Nakwada, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, intensifying pre-2027 election manoeuvres in the state.
The defection was confirmed in a statement issued on Thursday in Gusau by the Zamfara State APC Publicity Secretary, Malam Yusuf Idris, who described the development as a significant boost for the ruling party.
According to Idris, the defector, a younger sibling of the Secretary to the State Government, was a notable financier of Governor Dauda Lawal’s 2023 governorship campaign under the PDP. His exit, party officials say, signals growing cracks within the opposition and rising confidence in the APC’s leadership structure in the state.
In a related development, the PDP’s former chairmanship aspirant for Gusau Local Government Area, Hon. Hassan Idris Gusau, has also dumped the PDP for the APC. Both politicians were formally received in Abuja on Thursday by the Minister of State for Defence and former Zamfara governor, Dr Bello Matawalle.

The defectors, alongside their supporters, expressed satisfaction with what they described as unity, inclusiveness and internal harmony within the APC. In separate remarks, they praised the party’s leadership, citing figures such as Matawalle and former governor, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, for fostering an environment where members are treated fairly regardless of background.
Malam Yusuf Idris said the new entrants pledged total loyalty to the APC and assured party leaders that their supporters had fully embraced the decision to defect. He added that the defectors vowed to mobilise grassroots support to ensure the APC’s success in future elections.
Receiving them, Matawalle assured the defectors that they would enjoy the full rights, privileges and opportunities available to all APC members. He urged them to immediately galvanise their supporters to participate actively in the ongoing electronic registration and revalidation exercise of the party.
The latest defections are seen as part of a broader political recalibration in Zamfara, as major parties position themselves for the 2027 general elections amid increasing competition for influence and grassroots support.
