Tennis legend Serena Williams has fueled speculation about a possible return to professional tennis, despite recently completing paperwork and maintaining her position in the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s (ITIA) drug-testing pool.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion retired after the 2022 US Open, ending an illustrious career that made her one of the sport’s most dominant figures. However, reports that Williams is back in the ITIA testing pool have sparked renewed curiosity about a potential comeback.

In December, the ITIA confirmed to BBC Sport that the 44-year-old was once again listed among players eligible for drug testing—a requirement for all active competitors, including top-ranked singles, doubles, wheelchair players, and returning athletes. Inclusion in the pool mandates that players report their whereabouts for testing for at least one hour each day, and a six-month period in the pool is required before competing.

When questioned by reporters on Wednesday, Williams remained characteristically playful but noncommittal. “I don’t know, I’m just going to see what happens,” she said, leaving the door slightly open for a return. She added later, “It’s not a maybe,” when pressed on her intentions.

Williams, a mother of two, revealed that she recently listed her occupation as a stay-at-home mom and housewife on official forms, highlighting her focus on family life. On questions about her status in the drug-testing pool, she declined to comment, saying, “I can’t discuss this… if I want to put it [rumors] to rest… listen, I want to go to bed.”

Her name first appeared on the ITIA list released on October 6 and remained there on the updated December document. Analysts note that her continued presence in the pool keeps the door open for a return, and it also preserves the possibility of one final doubles partnership with her sister Venus Williams, who is 45 and still competing.

While Serena Williams has not officially announced a comeback, her recent comments and continued eligibility for testing have reignited excitement among tennis fans worldwide. Whether she chooses to return for singles, doubles, or a farewell tour with Venus, the tennis world is watching closely.
