Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, on Monday formally defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring that his decision was not driven by personal ambition but by the overriding need to secure stability, progress and development for the state.

The governor was received into the ruling party at the Coronation Hall of the Kano State Government House by former National Chairman of the APC and ex-Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, and the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, amid a large gathering of party leaders and supporters.

Supporters at the event included party faithful wearing red caps with the infinity symbol associated with President Bola Tinubu, while the governor also appeared in his normal apparels of red cap and white

Also present were APC chieftain, Abdulkarim Zaura; the party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Kano, Nasiru Gawuna, and his running mate, Murtala Sule Garo; Senator Kawu Sumaila; Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Jibrin Falgore; Minister of State for Housing, Yusuf Atta; former Speaker, Kabiru Rurum; former Deputy Governor, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar; former Governor, Tijjani Ahmed Gwarzo; members of the national and state assemblies, commissioners and other party leaders.

Announcing his defection, Gov. Yusuf said his return to the APC followed wide consultations and a sober assessment of the present realities facing Kano State and Nigeria.

He said aligning with the ruling party at the centre would enhance cooperation, access and delivery of governance.

“This decision is not driven by personal ambition or political excitement. It is anchored on one overriding consideration: the stability, progress and well-being of our state and its people,” Gov. Yusuf said.

He added that the people of Kano were more interested in results than political rivalries, stressing that effective governance in today’s Nigeria required strategic alignment and cooperation rather than isolation.

In his remarks, APC state Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, described the governor’s defection as a bold step taken in the interest of peace, unity and progress of Kano State, adding that it signified a united APC in the state.

Also speaking, Ganduje assured Gov. Yusuf of the party’s full backing, including support for victory in the 2027 governorship election.

He further pledged an automatic ticket for the governor, noting that the APC was committed to ensuring continuity and stability in Kano State.

Senator Barau Jibrin also welcomed the governor, describing the defection as a major boost for the APC and a significant step towards consolidating development and political stability in the state. He also assured the governor of full support in 2027.
