Tottenham Hotspur have opened talks with Liverpool over a potential move for experienced left-back Andy Robertson, as the North London club explores options ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Scotland international, who turns 31 this year, is entering the final months of his contract at Anfield and is expected to become a free agent at the end of the season. Robertson recently admitted uncertainty over his future, sparking transfer interest amid his reduced role in Liverpool’s Premier League campaign.

Robertson has made just four league starts this season and is believed to be keen on securing regular playing time as he looks to remain a key figure for Scotland ahead of the next World Cup. Sources indicate that Tottenham have made initial contact with Liverpool, although discussions are still at an early stage and no agreement has been reached.

Liverpool signed Robertson from Hull City for £8 million in 2017 during the reign of former manager Jurgen Klopp. He went on to establish himself as one of the Premier League’s most consistent full-backs, making 363 appearances for the club and playing a central role in their domestic and European successes.

His most recent outing came as a substitute in Liverpool’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Burnley on January 17. Ahead of that match, current head coach Arne Slot praised Robertson’s professionalism and influence, highlighting how the defender has handled competition from summer signing Milos Kerkez, who has largely displaced him in the starting lineup.

Tottenham’s interest comes at a time when injuries have disrupted their squad, with eight players currently sidelined. However, only one defender, Ben Davies, is unavailable after suffering a broken ankle. Head coach Thomas Frank still has options at left-back, including Destiny Udogie, who has recently returned from injury, Djed Spence, who can operate on both flanks, and Brazilian defender Souza, who joined the club for £13 million earlier this week.

Given Spurs’ ongoing need for reinforcements in midfield, a move for Robertson has raised questions about their transfer priorities. Nevertheless, his experience and leadership could appeal to Tottenham as they seek stability and depth across the squad.

For Liverpool, a potential departure would leave Kerkez as the only senior left-back available to Slot. The club could respond by recalling Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma should Robertson exit Anfield.

As talks continue, Robertson’s future remains one of the key storylines to watch ahead of a busy summer in the Premier League transfer market.
