The Kano State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has arrested a 20-year-old man for attempting to smuggle Indian hemp into a custodial facility within the Kano High Court premises.
The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Lawan-Kofarnasarawa.
The statement said the suspect, who resides in Tishama Hotoro Quarters, Kano, was apprehended by officers from the Goron Dutse Custodial Centre while inmates were being escorted to court for their scheduled hearings.
It stated that officers discovered a substance suspected to be Indian hemp concealed inside a loaf of bread, which the suspect allegedly intended to pass to an inmate during court proceedings.

The statement further disclosed that the Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Ado Inuwa, has ordered that the suspect be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Inuwa commended the Officer-in-Charge of the Goron Dutse Custodial Centre, ACC Kafilu Abdullahi, and other officers involved for their vigilance and professionalism in preventing the introduction of prohibited substances into the facility.
He reiterated the Service’s commitment to maintaining safe and drug-free custodial centres across the state and urged parents and guardians to caution youths against engaging in criminal activities.
The Controller added that the Nigerian Correctional Service remains committed to its mandate of reforming, rehabilitating and reintegrating inmates into society.
The command noted that the arrest follows a recent similar attempt to smuggle illicit substances into a custodial facility, underscoring ongoing efforts to curb criminal activities within correctional centres.
