The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has announced that its former presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, will not be permitted to run for the 2027 presidential election under the party’s banner.

This information was shared by the party’s National Secretary, Ogini Olaposi, in a statement released on Sunday in Lagos.

Olaposi indicated that the 2027 presidential nomination will be available exclusively to genuine party members wishing to compete.

He noted that Kwankwaso’s exclusion is due to ongoing disputes between the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

He clarified that while the NNPP had an agreement with the Kwankwasiyya Movement in 2022, that arrangement concluded following the 2023 general elections.

Olaposi mentioned that post-election, certain members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement engaged in activities detrimental to the party, resulting in the expulsion of several leaders, including Kwankwaso and Buba Galadima, a decision that remains unchanged.

He emphasized that unlike in 2023, when the party’s ticket was directly given to Kwankwaso, the NNPP will now allow all eligible members to vie for the 2027 presidential nomination.

He noted that there are already interested candidates, including members from the NNPP diaspora, and the party is open to more contenders and potential alliances.

Olaposi rejected assertions that Kwankwaso possesses the national clout to demand a presidential ticket from any party he joins, stating that his political influence has diminished, even in Kano State, as many of his key supporters have shifted to the APC.

He added that President Bola Tinubu and the APC will approach the 2027 election based on government performance rather than personal influence.

Olaposi cautioned that Kwankwaso and his faction no longer hold the authority to represent or negotiate on behalf of the NNPP.

He stated that all alliances for the 2027 elections will be determined by the party’s National Working Committee, which he described as the legally recognized body.

This announcement comes amid reports that opposition figures, including Kwankwaso, are being pursued by other political parties in anticipation of the 2027 elections.
