Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has restated that his administration remains firmly focused on the mission of delivering visible, people-centred development across Edo State.

The governor said the mandate given to him by the Edo people was clear and non-negotiable, stressing that nothing would distract his government from transforming the state.

Gov. Okpebholo spoke in Benin City at a town hall meeting with members of the Akpakomiza Movement for Tinubu, also known as Team FIGO-Connect.

“You voted for me for a reason, and that reason is the development of Edo State,” the governor declared.

“I have a clear vision to move Edo from an ancient city to a modern city, and I am not losing focus.”

He explained that projects currently ongoing across the state are based on the real needs of communities, not personal or political interests, noting that his leadership style is guided by firsthand experience of the challenges faced by residents.

Recalling a campaign visit to Temboga, the governor said the scale of gully erosion in the area left a lasting impression on him and influenced his development priorities.

“I went to Temboga, and I couldn’t even walk inside because of the depth of the gully erosion. I promised the people I would return if elected, and I kept that promise. Today, the results are visible,” Gov. Okpebholo said.

He added that development should not be seen as a personal achievement of the governor but a collective success driven by the will of the people.

“Without your votes, I wouldn’t be here. So, there is no special thank you to me. What we are seeing today belongs to all of us,” he stated.

On accountability, the governor noted that his administration receives the same statutory allocation as previous governments but has chosen to invest funds in projects with long-term impact.

“Our work will speak for us. A time will come when Edo people will ask questions and demand accountability,” he said.

Gov. Okpebholo also commended President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, describing them as bold and people-focused.

He cited the removal of fuel subsidy and recent tax reforms, noting that Nigerians earning below ₦150,000 are now exempt from paying tax.

“Our president is carrying the common man along. Leakages have been blocked, and those who were feeding fat on the old system are now uncomfortable,” he said.

He listed ongoing projects such as the durable reconstruction of Sapele Road, erosion control and road works in Ogheghe, as well as interventions in long-neglected public schools, as proof of his administration’s commitment to sustainable development in Edo State.

The town hall ended with renewed assurances of support for Gov. Okpebholo, as participants pledged to work together to sustain development and economic growth across Edo State.

Nigeria defeat Algeria 2–0 to reach AFCON Semifinals, set up clash with hosts Morocco

Nigeria defeat Algeria 2–0 to reach AFCON Semifinals, set up clash with hosts Morocco Paul Joseph Nigeria booked their place in the semifinals of the Africa Cup of Nations with a commanding 2–0 victory over Algeria on Saturday, setting up a high-stakes showdown against host nation Morocco. The Super Eagles delivered a disciplined and clinical performance to see off a resilient Algerian side, continuing their strong run in the tournament. The win sends Nigeria into the AFCON semifinals, where they will face Morocco, a matchup that carries added intrigue given the history between both teams. Nigeria and Morocco have each recorded two wins against one another in previous AFCON meetings, adding an extra edge to the looming encounter. Earlier in the day, Morocco secured their own semifinal ticket after defeating Cameroon 2–0 in Rabat. The result marked the Atlas Lions’ return to the AFCON final four for the first time since 2004, sparking celebrations among home supporters. Backed by a vocal crowd and buoyed by momentum, Morocco are now one victory away from reaching the final on home soil. The quarterfinal clash between Nigeria and Algeria was tightly fought in the opening half, with both teams cancelling each other out in a physical and tactically intense contest. Chances were limited, and the teams went into the break locked at 0–0. Nigeria emerged with greater purpose after halftime and broke the deadlock almost immediately. Victor Osimhen rose highest to power home a header in the 47th minute, giving the Super Eagles a crucial lead. The goal shifted the balance of the game and forced Algeria to chase the match. Ten minutes later, Osimhen turned provider, delivering the assist for Akor Adams, who finished calmly to double Nigeria’s advantage. The second goal effectively sealed the result, as Nigeria managed the remainder of the game with confidence and composure. The victory reinforces Nigeria’s status as one of the tournament favourites and sets the stage for a blockbuster semifinal against Morocco, with a place in the AFCON final at stake. All eyes will now be on the clash between the Super Eagles and the Atlas Lions as both sides chase continental glory.
