The Federal High Court in Abuja has denied bail to the Bauchi State Finance Commissioner, Yakubu Adamu, and his co-defendants, accused of financing terrorism with $9.7 million.
Justice Emeka Nwite, on Monday, ruled that the charges threaten national security and public safety.
He emphasized that terrorism offences jeopardize social order and that bail could endanger the public, making it inappropriate.
The judge ordered a prompt case hearing.

While recognising the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, he noted this isn’t absolute.
He said relevant factors, like the offense’s nature, evidence, and potential punishment, must be considered, citing a 2001 case involving Bamaiyi.
Justice Nwite highlighted that bail depends on the likelihood that the accused won’t flee or interfere with witnesses, ensuring justice.
Reviewing evidence and witness statements, he affirmed the case’s threat to security and the prosecution’s reasonable presumption of guilt. He concluded that speeding up the case serves justice.
Justice Nwite adjourned the matter until January 13 for the commencement of the trial.
Adamu and his co-defendants were remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre following their arraignment on a 10-count charge on December 31, 2025, and the judge fixed today for ruling on their bail applications.
