Nine soldiers have been confirmed dead following an explosion involving Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted by Boko Haram terrorists near Gubio in Borno State.
A military source revealed that investigations have determined the explosives were planted by Boko Haram.
The source explained that the soldiers were en route from Maiduguri when the tragic event occurred.
“While returning from Maiduguri on Saturday, they stopped at a camp along the road to continue their journey on Sunday,” the source stated.
The military official noted that several soldiers were injured in the incident, with the death toll rising after the initial explosion.
“Eight soldiers died yesterday (Sunday) among those who were injured, and one more died this morning,” the source disclosed.
Clarifying the nature of the attack, the source emphasized that it was not an ambush by the terrorists, but rather an explosion from planted devices.
“The incident occurred in Gubio, not from an ambush; it was due to explosive devices,” the source clarified.
He further confirmed the high number of casualties, stating, “many sustained serious injuries,” and added that “nine people have been confirmed dead.”
The source provided additional information, stating that the affected soldiers belonged to “145 Damasak under 5 Brigade Maiduguri, Borno State,” and that “the incident took place in the evening (on Sunday).”
A video and images obtained by journalists and circulated online depicted the aftermath of the tragic event, showing several soldiers lying lifeless after what appeared to be a devastating attack.
The shocking visuals indicate that many of the deceased soldiers had “severed body parts,” implying they were struck by powerful explosives.
