The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, has praised the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her continued commitment to maternal and child welfare through the annual first baby of the year initiative.

Mahmoud, who accompanied the first lady to welcome the first baby of 2026 at the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, Abuja, on Thursday, described the tradition as “a compassionate gesture” that reflects the first lady’s concern for newborns, mothers and family well-being.

She congratulated the parents of the newborn, saying the child’s arrival symbolised hope and a fresh start for Abuja and the country.

The minister also commended health workers for their role in ensuring safe deliveries during festive periods.

“As we usher in 2026, let us recommit to safeguarding mothers and children, supporting families, and fostering a healthier Abuja. Every child deserves the best start in life,” Mahmoud said.

The minister reaffirmed the FCT Administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure, expanding access to services and prioritising skilled medical personnel, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

She added that the FCT Administration would continue to encourage residents to prioritise health and family well-being.

Meanwhile, the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat has begun distributing essential neonatal kits to nursing mothers across primary healthcare centres in the six area councils.

Mandate Secretary of the Secretariat, Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, represented by the Director of Child Development, Dr. Idris Yahaya, said the initiative aligns with the First Lady’s passion for early child care and support for vulnerable families.

Items distributed include baby wrappers, clothing, reusable or disposable diapers, towels, soap, petroleum jelly, methylated spirit for cord care and hand sanitizers.

The distribution is expected to continue across health facilities in the territory as part of efforts to improve maternal and child health outcomes.
