Ondo State Governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has transmitted a fresh tax bill to the state House of Assembly, just 24 hours before the Federal Government’s new tax regime takes effect on January 1, 2026.

The move, confirmed on Wednesday by the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, follows Tuesday’s State Executive Council meeting chaired by the governor. A statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Ebenezer Adeniyan, said the bill is expected to undergo legislative scrutiny before passage.

Ajulo explained that the proposal aligns Ondo State’s tax framework with the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, stressing that the synchronisation will position the state for efficiency, transparency and improved revenue generation.

“The new bill is designed to ensure that Ondo State’s tax framework operates in tandem with national standards under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 and related reforms, promoting efficiency, transparency, and sustainable revenue generation for the benefit of all residents,” Ajulo said.

He added that the reforms are targeted at boosting economic growth, improving service delivery and creating a fair environment for taxpayers, including reliefs for low-income earners and small businesses.

Describing the move as “a proactive step towards integrating Ondo State into the evolving national tax landscape,” the AG urged residents and stakeholders to participate in the legislative process.

Meanwhile, the state government has approved Friday, January 2, 2026, as a work-free day for civil servants. The Head of Service, Mr Bayo Philip, said the decision would allow workers ample time to return from the New Year break.

He noted that work resumes formally on Monday, January 5, with the traditional first workday prayer session at the Governor’s Office complex in Akure.

Philip urged civil servants and the public to take note, describing the gesture as a needed relief for the workforce.
