Political activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has reiterated his criticism of the nation’s political leadership, connecting it to the recent tragic road accident involving world boxing champion Anthony Joshua (AJ) and his friends in Ogun State.

Sowore stated that the incident, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of two of Joshua’s friends, underscores significant failures in governance and systemic neglect, especially regarding road safety and emergency response.

In a statement posted on his official social media accounts, Sowore revealed that he had previously warned Joshua against aligning with what he termed “Nigeria’s corrupt leadership,” emphasizing that his stance has not changed.

He insisted that the tragedy should not be downplayed simply because Joshua survived, pointing out that the loss of lives warrants serious national contemplation.

“Yesterday or even today is not a time to celebrate the horrific accident that nearly took the life of international boxing star Anthony Joshua,” Sowore wrote.

“Sadly, it did claim the lives of his companions and possibly the driver involved. Their deaths should not be treated as mere footnotes to the survival of a celebrity.”

He noted that while the accident gained significant attention due to Joshua’s international fame, similar incidents happen daily across the nation with little recognition.

Sowore attributed the recurring fatalities on Nigerian roads to weak institutions and poor governance.

“These types of deadly accidents are the harsh reality of a nation that has failed in both minor and major aspects,” he stated.

“A country where road safety agencies and the police cannot even provide the most basic first aid.”

He further criticized the absence of emergency infrastructure, such as functional ambulances and trained responders.

“Where there are no stretchers, no operational ambulances, and certainly no air ambulances,” Sowore added.

“Where individuals die not only from accidents but also due to institutional neglect.”

The activist argued that the situation highlights the urgent need for fundamental national change, driven by accountability and respect for human life.

“This is why we must work sincerely and tirelessly towards a revolution rooted in dignity, competence, and the sanctity of human life,” he said.

Reflecting on his previous conversations with the boxing star, Sowore mentioned that he had warned Joshua years ago about the dangers of associating with political leaders he believes have failed the country.

“I spoke candidly to Anthony Joshua years ago about the risks of aligning with Nigeria’s corrupt leadership,” he wrote.

“It was an unpopular warning at the time, and many dismissed it. However, time has a way of confirming uncomfortable truths.”

Sowore concluded by urging Joshua to distance himself from Nigerian political elites, arguing that influential figures should not legitimize what he deems unacceptable.
