The Ekiti State government has terminated the employment of a surgeon at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) due to allegations of kidney removal from a patient.

This decision follows the findings of an investigative panel.

The seven-member panel, led by Prof. Francis Faduyile, was established about two weeks ago after Joshua Afolayan claimed that organ harvesting occurred during his surgery at the teaching hospital.

In response to the panel’s investigation results, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, announced the surgeon’s dismissal in a statement on Friday.

The commissioner reassured the public of the government’s commitment to preventing such incidents, clarifying that the situation was a “surgical complication and not organ harvesting for rituals as alleged.”

Dr. Filani also stated that the government would cover the costs of a new kidney transplant for Joshua Afolayan and provide for his post-transplant care and related medical expenses for two years.

He added: “The surgeon primarily responsible for the operation will be dismissed from EKSUTH immediately, and all members of the surgical team present during the procedure will be suspended for one month pending further review.”

Furthermore, in line with the panel’s recommendations, a comprehensive reorganization of relevant departments within EKSUTH will be implemented to enhance clinical governance, accountability, and patient safety.
