The Borno State Police Command has averted a potential explosion in Maiduguri following the recovery of an unexploded ordnance (UXO) discovered beneath a telecommunications mast in the city.

According to the police, the incident occurred on Monday, December 15, 2025, when a report was received at about 11:06 a.m. by the ITE Police Division regarding a suspected explosive device at Chuskon, Federal Low Cost Area, Maiduguri.

On receiving the alert, the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, immediately directed the Commander of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal–Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit, Base 13 Maiduguri, to mobilize to the scene. The EOD-CBRN team promptly cordoned off the area and, following standard safety procedures, successfully rendered the device safe.

Preliminary findings indicated that the UXO, which had two protruding wires, was deliberately planted by yet-to-be-identified individuals with the intent to cause serious damage. Items recovered at the scene included a hand plier, a T-shirt and a pair of shoes.

Following the operation, police officers conducted safety awareness and sensitization sessions for residents of the area, stressing the need for vigilance and the prompt reporting of suspicious objects to security agencies.

The Commissioner of Police has also directed Divisional Police Officers across the state to intensify patrols and strengthen the protection of critical public and private assets, particularly communication facilities and other sensitive infrastructure, to prevent acts of sabotage.

The police command assured residents of its continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property, while urging the public to support security efforts with timely and credible information. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, but normal activities have since resumed in the area.

Members of the public were advised to remain vigilant and report emergencies through the police contact numbers: 0806 807 5581 and 0802 347 3293.
