The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has awarded degree certificates to six inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja.
The graduation ceremony took place in Abuja and highlighted a significant achievement in the university’s collaboration with the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS).
Controller-General of the NCoS, Sylvester Nwakuche, commended the inmates for their resolve to pursue education while incarcerated, calling their accomplishment a testament to the effectiveness of rehabilitation through education.
According to the statement, the graduates completed various programmes at NOUN while in custody, earning two Master’s degrees in peace studies and conflict resolution, as well as four Bachelor’s degrees in peace studies and conflict resolution, political science, criminology, and security studies.

Nwakuche noted that the programme exemplifies NOUN’s dedication to inclusive education and the correctional service’s emphasis on reform and reintegration.
Speaking on behalf of the Controller-General, his deputy, Amos Kupan, stated that education equips inmates with skills and instills hope for a brighter future upon their release.
Dr. Francis Enobore, representing NOUN, reiterated the university’s commitment to enhancing educational opportunities in custodial facilities, while a graduate expressed appreciation for the chance to learn during their time in custody.
