The Hisbah Board Stakeholders Committee in Kano State has rejected moves by private individuals or organisations to establish an independent Hisbah corps, warning that such attempts are politically motivated and capable of triggering chaos and insecurity across the state.

Chairman of the committee, Prof. Ibrahim Mu’azzam-Mai-Bushira, made the position of the committee known on Thursday during a press briefing at the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), on Thursday evening.

He reaffirmed that the Kano State Hisbah Board remains the only legally recognised Hisbah institution, established under the 2003 state law passed by the House of Assembly pursuant to Section 100 of the 1999 Constitution

He maintained that any alternative structure would undermine the law and disrupt public order.

“Any move by any person or private organisation to establish an independent Hisbah would be seen as a politically motivated action aimed at creating chaos, anarchy and insecurity in the state,” he stated.

He noted that despite operational challenges, the state Hisbah has been performing its mandate satisfactorily and must be strengthened, not duplicated.

The committee further urged the state government to adhere to due process before dismissing personnel and ensure recruitment are done based on educational qualification, moral integrity and physical fitness with improved welfare packages.

The committee also called for an overhaul of training programmes to enhance professionalism; periodic self-audits to ensure discipline; wider strategic partnerships to promote accountability; and robust funding and the provision of modern equipment to boost operational efficiency.

While urging Governor Abba Yusuf to ensure the full implementation of the recommendations, the committee reaffirmed Hisbah’s pivotal role in promoting peace, social order and moral guidance in Kano.
