The Nigeria Labour Congress has announced that it will hold a nationwide protest on December 17 because of growing insecurity across the country.

This decision was revealed in a communiqué issued Tuesday after the NLC National Executive Council meeting held in Lagos. The document was signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero and Acting General Secretary Benson Upah.

The NEC strongly condemned the recent abduction of 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the killing of a staff member during the attack. The group also criticised the withdrawal of security officers from the school before the incident happened.

The communiqué described the increasing attacks on schools as alarming and urged the Federal Government to quickly secure all schools, especially those in remote and high-risk areas.

The NLC said all its affiliates and state councils will be mobilised for the protest. It also demanded a full investigation into the security failures that made the Kebbi attack possible.

Other issues discussed at the meeting include the challenges facing tertiary education, the ongoing strike by the Joint Health Sector Unions, and the revival of the Labour–Civil Society Coalition.

The NEC also expressed concern about the state of the Labour Party and encouraged members to restore the party’s values, principles and integrity.

The communiqué warned that if the Federal Government fails to address insecurity and other key problems, workers across major sectors such as health and education may begin more serious industrial actions.

The NLC stressed that workers’ safety and welfare remain its top priority and encouraged citizens to support efforts to make the country safer.

It also said the December 17 protest will be peaceful but firm, adding that the goal is to push the government to take immediate action.

The NEC urged state governments and security agencies to improve protection for vulnerable communities, especially schools and students. It warned that continued neglect could threaten national stability.

The NLC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting workers’ rights, improving living and working conditions, and supporting policies that promote fairness and development across Nigeria.
