The Delta State Police Command on Tuesday staged a 5km Walkathon in Asaba to commemorate the 70th anniversary of women in the Nigeria Police Force and to ramp up public awareness on gender-based violence.

Led by the Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, the march brought together female personnel from various divisions, senior officers, male counterparts, civil society groups and residents who joined in solidarity with survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

Senior women officers coordinated the exercise, which highlighted decades of contributions by female police personnel since 1955 and renewed calls for stronger community action against domestic abuse, rape, trafficking and other gender-related crimes.

Abaniwonda praised the discipline, resilience and professionalism of women officers in the Command, noting their roles in investigations, crime prevention, community policing and victim support. He said gender-responsive policing remains a priority and vowed that the Command would continue to ensure diligent prosecution of offenders.

He urged residents to speak up and report all forms of abuse, stressing that silence enables perpetrators. “We remain committed to protecting vulnerable groups and strengthening partnerships to eliminate gender-based violence in Delta State,” he said.

The Command encouraged the public to report incidents to the nearest police station or via its emergency line: 08036684974.

The event formed part of nationwide activities marking 70 years of women’s service in the Nigeria Police Force.
