Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has sworn to step down as governor, if President Bola Tinubu does not secure 3.5 million votes from the state in the upcoming 2027 presidential election.

During a TVC interview, the governor expressed his strong belief that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is well-positioned to achieve a significant victory for the president.

Okpebholo mentioned that as a token of gratitude, that the people of Edo are eager to re-elect President Tinubu, pointing out that support for him is growing across all communities.

“If you vote for me, you are voting for President Tinubu first. We are committed to delivering 3.5 million votes,” he stated. He also emphasized the importance of wearing Tinubu’s signature cap, as he feels a deep connection to the president.

The governor asserted that Tinubu’s influence in Edo now exceeds his own, referring to the president as “our father” and claiming there is no significant opposition in the state as the elections approach.

Okpebholo pointed out that the mobilization efforts across all 18 local government areas indicate that the APC is on track for a decisive victory in the 2027 elections.

He also took a jab at his predecessor, former governor Godwin Obaseki, accusing him of leaving behind a legacy that has alienated him from the populace.

Okpebholo remarked that Obaseki would find it difficult to return to Edo due to his alleged poor performance, adding that, unlike himself, children and mothers would not be seen praying for the former governor in the streets.
