Nigeria has strongly denounced the military takeover in Guinea Bissau, describing it as an unlawful disruption of democratic governance and a dangerous setback for West Africa. The position was made public in a statement issued by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the statement, Nigeria views the coup with deep concern, warning that it threatens the region’s hard-won democratic progress. The government called for the prompt restoration of constitutional authority, the protection of all detained officials and respect for the institutions that guide Guinea Bissau’s political structure.
Nigeria cited the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which rejects any attempt to seize power outside constitutional channels. It also urged the authorities in Guinea Bissau to guarantee the safety of election observers who remain in the country.
