Just a day after Nigeria’s First Lady, Remi Tinubu, invited senators to dinner at the Aso Villa, she has received significant criticism from Nigerians who believe the invitation demonstrates a lack of compassion for the schoolgirls kidnapped by terrorists and other violent events happening in the country.

The first lady had invited Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other senators to a dinner planned for this Friday at 6 p.m. at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa.

However, many Nigerians have taken to social media to voice their disapproval of the first lady’s decision to host the senators, suggesting that she should instead focus on meetings aimed at tackling the serious security challenges facing the nation.

One female Facebook user, Oseni Lateefat, in her reaction, commented that “the country is in turmoil, and you’re organizing a dinner? This is completely absurd.”

Another user, Ogunsola Idris Abolore, remarked that “I thought they said the president hasn’t been eating because of the situation in Nigeria?”

Kizito D Keke Driver also expressed his disappointment, saying: “We are dealing with insecurity, and you are hosting a dinner?”

Another social media user, Jmk Lmeyalom declared: “Madam Remi, Nigeria is suffering right now… Instead of organizing a dinner, you should declare three days of fasting and prayer for the nation.”

Cleve Sanchez shared, “I watched this and shed tears for us Nigerians.”

Aburo David Olayinka stated that “Yes, it may not be the best time for the first lady to invite senators for dinner, given the current circumstances; however, it’s not wrong for the Senate president to refer to her as our mother.

“As the president’s wife and the first lady, she represents the mother of the nation, which includes all citizens, residents, and those in the diaspora.”

This scenario is coming amid a surge in attacks by armed groups, with the number of abducted individuals exceeding the 276 taken during the infamous Chibok mass kidnapping in 2014.
