Rivers State has announced plans to bring its civil servants under the Employees’ Compensation Scheme managed by the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund. The Secretary to the State Government, Dr Benibo Anabraba, made the disclosure while hosting the leadership of the Trade Union Congress, Rivers State Council, in his office on Thursday.

Dr Anabraba said the administration is reviewing the scheme’s framework and expects to begin implementation once Governor Siminalayi Fubara gives final approval. He explained that the programme will offer medical support and rehabilitation for workers who suffer illness or injury in the course of duty, and provide compensation for families in the event of a fatal incident.

He noted that the state has already held discussions with NSITF officials and intends to move ahead with full participation. According to him, the welfare of workers remains central to the government’s agenda, and the scheme will help ensure that employees who face accidents or hazards on the job receive prompt care and assurance of protection.

The SSG added that the state plans to extend the scheme’s requirements to private sector operators, particularly those in construction and other high-risk industries. He said companies would be expected to obtain NSITF certification as part of their operations in Rivers State, a move aimed at safeguarding local workers and improving workplace safety standards.

Dr Anabraba also raised concern over the growing problem of truck drivers who park indiscriminately on major roads across the state. He warned that such behaviour endangers other road users and contributes to environmental hazards. He urged the TUC to educate its affiliated unions, including those in shipping, clearing, quarrying and road transport, on the need to comply with traffic laws. He cautioned that the government may be forced to take stronger measures if the violations continue.
