Markets across Asaba will be shut today, Thursday, November 20, 2025, as the late Odogwu of Asaba, Obi Chief Nwanze Oduah, is laid to rest.

The Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Asagba Prof. Epiphany Azinge (SAN), announced the closure during a press briefing at his palace on Wednesday, explaining that the decision was taken to honour the fallen warlord and ensure residents fully participate in his final rites.

He also declared a week-long mourning period across the city, during which activities will be toned down in recognition of the enormous loss to the Asaba Kingdom.

“Asaba lost one of her most illustrious sons on November 13, 2025,” the Asagba said. “Odogwu Ahaba, Obi Nwanze Oduah, was not only second in command in the Asaba hierarchy but also my cousin. His passing has created a deep vacuum.”

Describing the late Odogwu as a fearless defender of the community, the monarch praised his dedication to security and his bold stance against drug barons, peddlers and criminal elements.

“A great Iroko has fallen,” he declared. “The closure of markets will allow the entire city to feel the weight of this loss and pay him the honour he deserves.”

The Asagba extended condolences to the deceased’s family and the Umuonaje, Umuagulu and Mogbo communities.

He confirmed that the burial, in keeping with Asaba tradition, will take place today as the week-long mourning begins.
