The National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ini Ememobong Essien, has called on President Bola Tinubu to rein in the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

Essien criticized the police for dispersing PDP officials and journalists at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

He made these remarks after police used tear gas to break up a gathering of party members and journalists at the secretariat.

The PDP spokesman noted that several PDP governors were among those affected, stating that the police had been informed of the party’s concerns during a meeting between the national chairman and the commissioner of police on Monday.

Essien pointed out that security personnel allowed access to individuals who had been expelled from the party, while blocking entry to other members, including governors and the national chairman.

“You have been tear-gassed. We all know the truth. Today, some governors have been tear-gassed—what was the reason?

“Just yesterday, our party chairman met with the commissioner of police, where we clearly outlined our issues.

“Yet this morning, they facilitated the entry of expelled members while preventing the rightful party members from entering.

“The reality is that when the police arrived, we found people who immediately left upon seeing the rightful party members. The national chairman addressed the press, and we were present.

“Just as we were about to leave—having postponed our meeting for security reasons—someone was escorted in.

“The same individuals who barred us from entering, who prevented two governors and the national chairman from coming in, were escorting someone else. So, we remained here.

“What we expect is a return to order. We are calling on the president. History will remember this. This is a president who was once in opposition and was never treated this way.

“We are not asking him to assist the opposition; we are merely asking him to refrain from interfering with it.

“This individual has had conflicts with nearly everyone, including his fellow ministers. If the president cannot manage his minister’s behavior, history will note that he has harmed this republic,” he said.
