Cloudflare, the essential service for website security and performance, experienced a significant global network outage early Tuesday, causing widespread disruption across the internet. The incident immediately impacted thousands of websites and popular online services, highlighting the critical role Cloudflare plays in internet infrastructure.

Key Updates on the Cloudflare Outage

Initial Notification (Pre-7 a.m. EST): Cloudflare acknowledged the issue, stating, “Cloudflare is aware of, and investigating an issue which potentially impacts multiple customers.”
Mitigation and Easing Disruptions (Post-7 a.m. EST): Approximately 20 minutes after the initial alert, the company reported that service disruptions had begun to lessen, but the investigation was ongoing.
Restoration Progress (8:15 a.m. EST): Cloudflare confirmed major progress, announcing that error levels for several of its core services had “returned to pre-incident rates.” Full restoration work continues for all affected services.

Which Websites and Apps Were Affected?

Cloudflare provides crucial tools for content delivery, DDoS protection, and efficient traffic management. When its network falters, the impact is immediately felt by major online platforms that rely on its services.

High-profile services confirmed or reported to be affected by the outage included:

  • Social Media: X (formerly Twitter)
  • Gaming: The popular online game League of Legends
  • Streaming & E-commerce (Reported via DownDetector): Spotify and Amazon
  • Artificial Intelligence (Reported via DownDetector): OpenAI

This Cloudflare network issue follows closely on the heels of a major Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage that occurred nearly a month prior. These events underscore the interconnectedness of the internet and the vulnerability of global services when core cloud and security providers experience technical difficulties.
