President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a fresh five-year term for Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. The announcement confirms that Marwa will continue to lead the country’s anti-narcotics efforts until 2031.
The decision, released through a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media, Bayo Onanuga, extends the tenure of a man who has become central to Nigeria’s campaign against drug trafficking and substance abuse. Marwa first assumed office in January 2021 after serving as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse.
Marwa’s career in public service spans military command, state administration and diplomatic work. He previously governed Lagos and Borno States. He trained at the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy before taking up postings that included Brigade Major of the 23 Armoured Brigade and Aide-de-Camp to Lieutenant-General Theophilus Danjuma. He later served as Registrar of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Deputy Defence Adviser at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, and Defence Adviser to Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

His academic record includes a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University.
Since taking charge of the NDLEA, Marwa has overseen major operations that led to the arrest of more than seventy-three thousand traffickers and the seizure of over fifteen million kilograms of illicit drugs. The agency has also expanded its nationwide outreach on drug education and community engagement.
President Tinubu praised Marwa’s work and urged him to maintain the momentum, describing the renewed appointment as a strong endorsement of the agency’s progress and a call for deeper action against drug cartels targeting young Nigerians.
Marwa’s continued leadership places him at the centre of national security priorities as the fight against narcotics remains a major concern for the government and the wider public.
