Africa’s most enduring comedy franchise, Nite of a Thousand Laughs, is set to return to its roots as it commemorates an extraordinary 30 years of redefining the continent’s humour landscape.
The globally recognised show widely regarded as the mother of African comedy will mark its pearl anniversary on November 21, 2025, at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba, a city many consider the heartbeat of modern comedy in Nigeria.
Created by Delta-born entertainment icon Dr. Opa Williams, Nite of a Thousand Laughs has spent three decades discovering fresh talent, elevating rising acts to stardom, and positioning comedy as a powerful force of entertainment and emotional relief.
Reflecting on the milestone, Williams reaffirmed his belief that Delta State, especially Warri, remains the spiritual home of stand-up comedy in Africa. He recalled Warri’s famous “wording” culture, a tradition of sharp wit and quick punchlines that shaped many of Nigeria’s earliest comedy greats.
He added that taking the 30th anniversary celebration to Asaba is more than a venue choice; it is a symbolic homecoming for a movement that grew from local humour into a continental phenomenon.
