The Ebonyi State Government has carried out the demolition of illegal structures built along the Abakaliki–Afikpo Highway within the Integrated Building Materials Market, Abakaliki. The action is part of the state’s renewed effort to enforce urban development regulations and restore order in public markets.

The Commissioner for Market Development and Parks, Professor Nwogo Ajuka Obasi, who supervised the operation, said several warnings had been issued to owners of the affected structures but were ignored. He noted that despite repeated directives, many traders refused to comply, forcing the government to take decisive action.

Professor Obasi maintained that no individual, regardless of social or political standing, is above the law. He described the demolition as a necessary measure to protect public safety and preserve the integrity of the city’s master plan. “We cannot allow lawlessness to thrive under the guise of business activity,” he said. “Those who disobey lawful orders will face the full weight of the law.”

He explained that the Ministry of Market Development and Parks, in collaboration with the Ebonyi State Market Board led by Rt. Hon. Ikechukwu Nwankwo, had earlier issued several removal notices to traders at the market. Security agencies, he added, were also informed ahead of the enforcement to ensure a smooth and peaceful exercise.

Obasi reaffirmed that the government remains committed to modernising markets across Ebonyi and creating a well-organised environment for trade. “Our goal is to achieve orderly, safe, and modern markets where businesses can thrive without chaos,” he said.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Capital City Development, Hon. Sunday Inyima, condemned the erection of unapproved structures and urged traders to seek proper building approval before commencing any construction within the state capital. He warned that further violations would not be tolerated.

Members of the Ebonyi State Market Development Board, including Rt. Hon. Ikechukwu Nwankwo, Solomon Nwafor, Chinedu Nwoye, Friday Nwakpa, Daniel Okwuegbu, Barr. Chima, and Mr. Odo Gabriel Oyibe, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, were present during the exercise.

The Ministry reiterated its mission to promote efficiency and compliance across all markets in Ebonyi, restating its vision: “Easing Trade Through Proper Management.”
