The Kwara State Police Command has arrested four suspects over the brutal killing of the Chief Imam of Sokunkpan village in Tsaragi, Edu Local Government Area of the state.

The incident, which occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, reportedly followed a violent mob attack allegedly led by relatives of a deceased young man who accused the cleric of causing their brother’s death.

Police spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed the arrests in a statement obtained by SaharaReporters on Thursday.

According to her, the unrest began after the death of 25-year-old Ibrahim Gana, who had been on admission at a local hospital before he passed away. Following his demise, his brothers, identified as Mohammed Shaba and Mahmud Gana, allegedly accused the village’s Chief Imam, Alhaji Abdullahi Audu, of being responsible for his death.

“In an act of mob violence, the suspects mobilised several other individuals and attacked the Chief Imam with offensive weapons, leading to his death,” the statement read.

Ejire-Adeyemi added that police operatives swiftly intervened, arresting four suspects at the scene while others involved in the killing fled.

“Four suspects have been arrested, and the command has commenced a full investigation into the incident. We assure the public that justice will be served,” she said.

Reacting to the incident, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, condemned what he described as a “barbaric act of jungle justice,” warning residents against taking the law into their own hands.

“No one has the right to take another person’s life under any guise. Resorting to mob action only creates more tragedy and chaos. The command will not tolerate acts of lawlessness,” Ojo stated.

He urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement authorities by providing credible information that could help track down other fleeing suspects.

“We appeal to members of the public to report any suspicious activity or individuals to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency contacts,” the CP added.

Ojo also assured residents of Kwara State that the police remain committed to maintaining peace and ensuring that those responsible for the cleric’s killing face justice.

“The Kwara State Police Command under my leadership will continue to uphold professionalism, integrity, and accountability in all its operations,” he affirmed.
