The University of Abuja Alumni Association has cautioned the Federal Government, particularly the Ministry of Education, against any form of interference in the ongoing process to appoint a new Vice-Chancellor. The association said such actions in the past disrupted the university’s growth, eroded administrative stability, and left damaging legacies that still affect the institution.
In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Rauf Olaiya Sarafadeen-Kunle, on behalf of the National President, the alumni urged the University’s Governing Council to ensure that the ongoing selection process is transparent, fair, and rooted in merit. The association emphasized that the Vice-Chancellor’s position plays a defining role in shaping academic direction, administrative discipline, and the university’s overall culture.
According to the statement, the council must resist external pressure and maintain the integrity of the process to protect the university’s reputation. “The integrity of the University of Abuja is far more important than the ambitions of any individual or interest group,” it read in part.
The Alumni Association reaffirmed its commitment to fairness and called for the appointment of a home-grown professor who understands the university’s history and internal workings. It argued that the University of Abuja has produced numerous distinguished scholars and administrators whose loyalty and long-term service have strengthened the institution, making them suitable for leadership.

The association, however, clarified that local origin should not be the sole criterion. It said the next Vice-Chancellor must be academically excellent, administratively sound, visionary, and of impeccable character. “The University needs a leader who has demonstrated competence and a proven record of service to the community. Only such a person can guide the institution into its next phase of development,” it concluded.
The alumni also encouraged staff, students, and other members of the university community to remain vigilant and participate actively in ensuring that the process remains credible and free from manipulation.
