The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that all passengers aboard the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) are safe following a derailment that occurred near Agbor, Delta State, on Sunday.
According to a statement signed by NRC Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, the incident took place at about 7:30 p.m. and involved two out of the seven coaches of the train at Kilometer 212+8m, Agbor.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the derailment may have been caused by suspected track vandalism. However, no casualties or injuries were recorded.
“All passengers on board were safely evacuated to Agbor, and everyone has been fully accounted for,” the statement read.

Dr. Opeifa disclosed that recovery operations have been ongoing at the site, supported by security personnel. The team worked overnight to restore the affected section of the rail line and ensure it is safe for use.
“As a precautionary measure, train services along the corridor have been temporarily suspended to enable a comprehensive security and safety audit of the track and related infrastructure,” he added.
The NRC apologized to passengers and the general public for the inconvenience caused by the incident, assuring that normal services will resume once safety has been verified.
This is not the first time suspected vandalism has disrupted railway operations in Nigeria. Authorities have repeatedly warned that damage to rail infrastructure poses serious risks to public safety and hampers the country’s efforts to expand modern rail transport.
