The Delta State Police Command said it has arrested an officer seen in a viral video shooting at a moving vehicle in Asaba, the state capital.
Spokesperson for the command, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, saying the officer had been identified, detained, and was already facing internal disciplinary action.
According to Edafe, the Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, described the officer’s conduct as “unprofessional and unbecoming of a police officer,” stressing that no policeman is permitted to use a firearm without following due process as laid down in Force Order 237.

“The command condemns his act in totality as no policeman has the right to use his firearm without recourse to Force Order 237.
“It is the duty of every Nigerian Police officer to protect lives and property and not to put the life of anybody in danger,” the statement read.
Edafe added that while the policeman was said to be responding to a reported hit-and-run case, his resort to gunfire was unjustified.
“The erring policeman has been identified, summoned, and detained at the command headquarters. The CP has directed that internal disciplinary action be initiated immediately,” he said.
Abaniwonda assured the public that the officer would face the full weight of the law in accordance with police regulations and the Police Act, adding that the command remained committed to safeguarding lives and property in the state.
