The family of Bilyaminu Bello, who was tragically killed by his wife, Maryam Sanda, has criticized the recent presidential pardon granted to her.
They described this decision as a painful reminder of their loss and labeled it “the worst possible injustice.”
In a statement released by Dr. Bello Mohammed on behalf of the family, they expressed their dismay after Sanda’s name appeared on a list of 175 inmates granted clemency by the government.
Bilyaminu was murdered on November 19, 2017, and Maryam was convicted and sentenced to death in January 2020.
This verdict was upheld by higher courts, including the Supreme Court, just a few weeks ago.
The family feels that this pardon undermines the justice they sought and reopens their emotional wounds.

“Watching Maryam Sanda walk free as if her crime were insignificant is a deep injustice that no family should have to endure,” the family stated.
They also criticized the perceived leniency towards Sanda’s family and argued that the decision disregards the memory of the victim and the suffering of his loved ones.
The family pointed out that the rationale for her release, based on her children’s needs, is unwarranted since Sanda had previously denied her children the chance to experience their father’s love.
The Bello family affirmed their faith in ultimate justice, stating that they find solace in believing that true justice belongs to a higher power.
