The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Lagos State has congratulated Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan on his appointment as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and called on him to restore integrity and public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.
Speaking with reporters in Lagos, Mrs. Abiola Adeyemi, Secretary of IPAC and Chairperson of the Action People’s Party (APP) in the state, commended President Bola Tinubu’s choice and expressed optimism that Amupitan’s leadership would mark a turning point for Nigeria’s democracy.
Adeyemi noted that the credibility of elections in recent years has been questioned by many Nigerians, leading to widespread voter apathy and dwindling faith in the electoral process. She urged the new INEC boss to make transparency and accountability the foundation of his administration.
“We expect the newly appointed INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, to lead electoral reforms that reflect the people’s will. Nigerians want an election process that is transparent, technology-driven, and devoid of manipulation,” she said. “The biggest challenge before him is rebuilding trust in an institution that has struggled with credibility issues for too long.”
She encouraged the new chairman to strengthen legal backing for the electronic transmission of results and ensure seamless implementation across all polling units. Adeyemi also called for the full deployment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and other technological tools to eliminate rigging and restore faith in the system.
“Prof. Amupitan must ensure that INEC operates independently, free from political interference and partisanship. Only then can Nigerians begin to believe again in the sanctity of their votes,” she added.

Adeyemi further appealed for stronger reforms to curb vote buying and voter intimidation, insisting that true democracy can only thrive when citizens can vote freely and their choices are respected.
She described the appointment of Amupitan, a respected law professor and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, as a welcome development that offers hope for a fairer electoral process.
President Bola Tinubu’s nomination of Prof. Amupitan was endorsed by the National Council of State on Thursday, marking the formal end of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu’s ten-year tenure as INEC Chairman. Yakubu, who served two consecutive terms since 2015, presided over some of Nigeria’s most contested elections in recent history.
As Nigerians look ahead to future polls, expectations remain high that Prof. Amupitan will chart a new course for electoral credibility, transparency, and public trust in democratic institutions.
